The Mazda2 is a subcompact/supermini/B-segment small car manufactured and marketed globally past Mazda since 2002, currently in its 3rd generation. The Mazda2 has also been marketed as the Mazda Demio (a name it kept in the Japanese market until 2022), while its directly predecessor was exported equally the Mazda 121.

The Demio was redesigned in 2002. The Demio name continued in Japan, while the rest of the world dropped 121 and other names in favor of Mazda2. Since its debut, the ii has been well received by the marketplace, pushing its Japanese domestic sale to as high equally seventh place.

The second generation Demio is built on the similar platform to the 2008 Ford Fiesta. It employs lightweight materials and reduces the overall dimensions of the car. The Turbo2 is a concept auto based on the Demio. The 3dCarbon Mazda2 includes a 3dCarbon/Air Design body kit manufactured in high-pressure level polyurethane injection molding (a front end air dam, side skirts, a rear lower diffuser and Mazda2 Touring-spec upper rear spoiler), Spirited Light-green Metallic body-colour with vinyl graphic design by Sticky Fingers Design, darkly tinted windows, 3M Color Stable Metal-Gratuitous Window Film on the side and rear windows, front windshield with 3M Crystalline Nanofilm, Eibach Springs Pro-Kit and 18-inch Five:Advert S6:F Gunmetal wheels with Yokohama S.drive 215/35R18 tires.

Demio EV (2012–) [edit]

The Demio EV is a express (100 leased units) product electric vehicle for the Japanese market. It includes a 346-Volt 20kWh lithium-ion battery with 200 km (124 mi) driving range. Leasing began in October 2022.[50] [51] seventy% of Mazda2 BEV owners said they weren't happy with the 124-mile range of their electric car, even though they never needed more.[52]

Prototype Range Extender for EV (2013) [edit]

The range extender exam car was a version of the Mazda2 prototype electric machine with a 0.33-liter rotary engine, lithium-ion batteries, 75 kW electrical motor driving forepart wheels and 10-liter fuel tank.[52] This would double the range of the Demio EV, meeting Japanese requirements that the fuel tank and engine non provide more range than the electrical motor. Reports of a new generation of the Mazda2/Demio emerged in 2022[56] for a 2022 launch, with some manufacturing at the new Mazda plant in Mexico.[55] [57] The Mazda Hazumi Concept model (designed to preview the hereafter Mazda2 models) was unveiled at the 2022 Geneva Motor Show[58] and in April 2022 the development mule of the new generation Demio was undergoing testing in Germany, covered in camouflage.[59] [sixty] [61]

In July 2022, Mazda presented photos of the third generation Mazda2 hatchback,[62] and production began at Mazda'south Hōfu institute.[63] Sales in Japan began in September 2022. The sedan version debuted at the Thailand International Motor Expo in November 2022.[64] [65]

The third generation is based on a shortened variation of Mazda's CX-5 platform[66] and features greater length, wider front end and rear tracks, decreased interior room for rear-seat occupants and less front head and legroom.[67]

In 2022, the Mazda de México Vehicle Operation (MMVO) factory in Salamanca, Guanajuato began production of the Mazda2 for various N and South American markets.[68]

In October 2022, the Demio was awarded the 2022–2015 "Car of the Twelvemonth" by the Japan Auto of the Yr Committee.[2]

Despite the Mazda2 being produced in North America, at the new Mexico plant, Mazda appear that it would not sell the vehicle in Canada or the The states (except in Puerto Rico). While the Mazda2 is produced in Northward America at Mazda'south institute in Mexico, the company did not sell the vehicle in Canada or the United States (except in Puerto Rico). Instead, the Mazda2 was sold past Toyota Motor North America in those markets between 2022 and 2022.[69] [lxx] The rebadged Mazdas received different model codes starting with DA, DB, or DD.

In Canada, the vehicle was sold as the Yaris Sedan beyond all model years.[74] Mazda initially announced at the 2022 Montreal International Auto Show that it would offer the Mazda2 in the market place, simply canceled the rollout on 16 Nov 2022, and shifted the rollout to Toyota.

In Mexico, the vehicle was sold every bit the Yaris R, alongside the more austere and lower-priced Yaris Sedán (a variant of the Vios and later the Yaris ATIV). The Yaris R sold in three versions.[75]

In the United States, the sedan was sold under several names. In the initial 2022 model yr, information technology was marketed under Toyota'south youth-oriented Scion brand as the Scion iA, where it was the only 4-door sedan and only model not to exist built in Japan to exist marketed nether the brand. After discontinuing the Scion brand, the car was rebranded as the Toyota Yaris iA for the 2022 and 2022 model years.[76] For the 2022 and 2022 model years, the sedan was rebranded again as the Toyota Yaris Sedan.[77]

When first introduced, like all Scion vehicles, the iA only had one trim level (monospec) and but offered buyers a option of outside colour and a choice between 6-speed manual and 6-speed automated transmissions.[78] For 2022, with the Yaris Sedan rebranding, the vehicle received a minor facelift, and L, LE and XLE trim levels were introduced with a variety of interior and exterior options.[79]

The hatchback variant of the Mazda2 was non initially sold by Toyota, which instead offered a Yaris Liftback based on the Toyota Vitz (XP130). When the Vitz was discontinued, Toyota announced at the 2022 New York International Motorcar Show that a model called the Yaris Hatchback, based on the Mazda2, would keep sale in 2022 for the 2022 model twelvemonth.[80] [81]

Exports of both the sedan and hatchback to the United States were stopped in June 2022 due to new regulations and slow sales.[82] In July, Toyota Canada besides confirmed the counterfoil in the Canadian market place.[83] The Mazda2 based Yaris was besides discontinued in Mexico on Baronial 27, 2022, leaving only the Thai-imported XP150 series Yaris and Yaris Sedán as its indirect replacements.[84]
