Predecessor [edit]
When it came to redesigning the Revue, Mazda came up with a tall hatchback, minivan-esque package. Introduced in a fourth dimension full of negative press coverage, the Demio became a surprise hit for Mazda in Nihon, and also foreshadowed the current ingather of B-segment minivans such as the Opel Meriva, Fiat Thought and the Renault Modus. Sold as the 121 in almost consign markets, the DW's replacement was called the Mazda2 in most of the world. The Demio nameplate, however, continued to be used in Nippon until 2022.
The original Demio was introduced in July 1996 and replaced in 2002.

The Demio was redesigned in 2002. The Demio name continued in Japan, while the rest of the world dropped 121 and other names in favor of Mazda2. Since its debut, the ii has been well received by the marketplace, pushing its Japanese domestic sale to as high equally seventh place.
The badge-engineered Ford version, the Ford Fusion, is no longer made, as Ford began importing the Ford Fiesta on the global Ford B3 platform.[6] Product of the automobile for European market started at Almussafes Ford plant in Valencia, Espana on 20 January 2003.[7]
All Demios come up with ABS and EBD, and stability control is optional. An innovative feature offered in Japan is e-4WD, a hybrid car-type system which uses an electric motor to ability the rear wheels of this front end wheel drive vehicle when needed. In the Demio, this system is used only as a traction aid, non for increased fuel economy as in nearly other vehicles.
There is also a big difference in floor pan and pedal box. The European-exclusive version of Mazda2 (DY) uses a pedal box direct sourced from Ford Fiesta rather than their own 4x108 bolt design instead of 4x100.
Iii trim levels were available in Japan, Cozy, Sport, and Casual.
In Europe, trim levels were S, TS and TS2. The TS and TS2 were renamed Antares and Capella in 2004. The Japanese i.iii and 1.5 gasoline engines are not bachelor, simply Ford's 1.25-liter 16-valve Sigma engine is used, and Mazda's 1.four and ane.6 gasoline, plus Fords i.4 TDCi diesel fuel are offered but called i.4 CDTi by Mazda. (Virtually all the engine parts are interchangeable with the 1.iv diesel fuel version of the Ford Fiesta and Ford Fusion of the same menstruation).
In New Zealand the Mazda2 was sold with a 1.v ZY-VE directly-iv engine

Reports of a new generation of the Mazda2/Demio emerged in 2022[56] for a 2022 launch, with some manufacturing at the new Mazda plant in Mexico.[55] [57] The Mazda Hazumi Concept model (designed to preview the hereafter Mazda2 models) was unveiled at the 2022 Geneva Motor Show[58] and in April 2022 the development mule of the new generation Demio was undergoing testing in Germany, covered in camouflage.[59] [sixty] [61]
In July 2022, Mazda presented photos of the third generation Mazda2 hatchback,[62] and production began at Mazda'south Hōfu institute.[63] Sales in Japan began in September 2022. The sedan version debuted at the Thailand International Motor Expo in November 2022.[64] [65]
The third generation is based on a shortened variation of Mazda's CX-5 platform[66] and features greater length, wider front end and rear tracks, decreased interior room for rear-seat occupants and less front head and legroom.[67]
In 2022, the Mazda de México Vehicle Operation (MMVO) factory in Salamanca, Guanajuato began production of the Mazda2 for various N and South American markets.[68]
In October 2022, the Demio was awarded the 2022–2015 "Car of the Twelvemonth" by the Japan Auto of the Yr Committee.[2]
Despite the Mazda2 being produced in North America, at the new Mexico plant, Mazda appear that it would not sell the vehicle in Canada or the The states (except in Puerto Rico). Instead, the Mazda2 would be sold past Toyota Motor Due north America in those markets betwixt 2022 and 2022 (see department below).[69] [70]
The Demio nameplate was discontinued in all remaining markets in September 2022, and replaced past the Mazda2 moniker worldwide.[71]
The third-generation received a facelift for the 2022 model year with various outside changes, interior trim changes, revised suspension tuning to improve ride quality, improvements to the engine deceleration energy recovery arrangement, adaptive headlights, and standard K-Vectoring Command Plus.[71] With Toyota discontinuing its marketing of the Mazda2, the vehicle finally went on sale in Mexico, where it is produced. The facelift model went on sale in United mexican states in October 2022 for the 2022 model year. It comes in three versions: i, i Touring, and i Grand Touring with automatic transmission.[72]
Engines and manual [edit]
The Mazda2 uses Mazda's Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automated and Skyactiv-MT 5- and half dozen-speed manual gearboxes[73] too as stop-starting time applied science ("i-STOP" turns the engine off when the auto is stationary) and a brake free energy regeneration system ("i-ELOOP" uses braking to accuse a capacitor for all car electronics, in place of an alternator charging a bombardment).[73]
The Mazda2 is initially offered with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and a 1.v-liter diesel engine—the Skyactiv-D, 1.5-liter diesel engine debuted at the 2022 Geneva Motor Show.[58] The gasoline engine will be bachelor with 74 bhp, 89 bhp or 113 bhp, while the diesel will produce 104 bhp. The diesel engine was discontinued in Europe in 2022 and received an additional 1.5-liter mild hybrid gasoline engine in 2022. The later is simply bachelor with six-speed manual transmission.

Instead, the Mazda2 was sold past Toyota Motor North America in those markets between 2022 and 2022.[69] [lxx] The rebadged Mazdas received different model codes starting with DA, DB, or DD.
In Canada, the vehicle was sold as the Yaris Sedan beyond all model years.[74] Mazda initially announced at the 2022 Montreal International Auto Show that it would offer the Mazda2 in the market place, simply canceled the rollout on 16 Nov 2022, and shifted the rollout to Toyota.
In Mexico, the vehicle was sold every bit the Yaris R, alongside the more austere and lower-priced Yaris Sedán (a variant of the Vios and later the Yaris ATIV). The Yaris R sold in three versions.[75]
In the United States, the sedan was sold under several names. In the initial 2022 model yr, information technology was marketed under Toyota'south youth-oriented Scion brand as the Scion iA, where it was the only 4-door sedan and only model not to exist built in Japan to exist marketed nether the brand. After discontinuing the Scion brand, the car was rebranded as the Toyota Yaris iA for the 2022 and 2022 model years.[76] For the 2022 and 2022 model years, the sedan was rebranded again as the Toyota Yaris Sedan.[77]
When first introduced, like all Scion vehicles, the iA only had one trim level (monospec) and but offered buyers a option of outside colour and a choice between 6-speed manual and 6-speed automated transmissions.[78] For 2022, with the Yaris Sedan rebranding, the vehicle received a minor facelift, and L, LE and XLE trim levels were introduced with a variety of interior and exterior options.[79]
The hatchback variant of the Mazda2 was non initially sold by Toyota, which instead offered a Yaris Liftback based on the Toyota Vitz (XP130). When the Vitz was discontinued, Toyota announced at the 2022 New York International Motorcar Show that a model called the Yaris Hatchback, based on the Mazda2, would keep sale in 2022 for the 2022 model twelvemonth.[80] [81]
Exports of both the sedan and hatchback to the United States were stopped in June 2022 due to new regulations and slow sales.[82] In July, Toyota Canada besides confirmed the counterfoil in the Canadian market place.[83] The Mazda2 based Yaris was besides discontinued in Mexico on Baronial 27, 2022, leaving only the Thai-imported XP150 series Yaris and Yaris Sedán as its indirect replacements.[84]
